PHOTOCATALYTIC DECOMPOSITION OF 1,1-DIMETHYL HYDRAZINE IN AQUEOUS MEDIA BY RECYCLABLE TITANIA NANO PHOTOCATALYST

Abstract

 1, 1-Dimethylhydrazine (UDMH) is a toxic compound that is used as liquid fuel in missile. In this work, decomposition of UDMH in aqueous solution via photocatalytic oxidation procedure using Fe3O4@SiO2@TiO2 (FST) as recyclable photocatalyst in the presence of hydrogen peroxide and UV radiation has been investigated. The process was performed in a suspension reactor equipped with a UV-C lamp (150 W). Precipitation and sol gel methods have been applied for the synthesis of catalyst, characterization of which was performed using X-ray diffraction XRD, Fourier transform infrared FTIR, transmission electron microscopy TEM, and vibrating sample magnetometer VSM instruments. Effective parameters such as hydrogen peroxide concentration, amount of catalyst, and pH were optimized using response surface method. TOC analysis was used for determination of the amount of mineralization. The results showed that the mineralization of 50 ppm UDMH solution of about 79% can be performed using 85 ppm of FST, 800 ppm of H2O2 at pH=7 after 120 min.
