Title

INVESTIGATION OF DEFORMATIONAL BEHAVIOR OF SERPENTINITES IN BAFT OPHIOLITIC MELANGE (KERMAN PROVINCE) AND ITS EFFECTS ON THE SEISMIC POTENTIAL OF THE REGION

Abstract

Baft ophiolite complex is located along Baft and Shahr-e-Babak major faults in south of Kerman Province and known as a colored melange with a SERPENTINITE matrix. Petrofabric studies on SERPENTINITEs in this area show that SERPENTINITEs passed throughfive stages from the time of formation until present day. These stages include: Initial static serpentinization of peridotites in oceanfloor, ductile deformation in greenschist facies condition (probability due to subduction of oceanic crust), another ductile deformation during diapiric uprise of SERPENTINITEs, ductile-brittle deformation condition stage andfinally, brittle deformation regime during emplacement at near earth surface. Electron microprobe analyses show that there are some differences between the compositions of serpentines in each stage. Compatible elements such as Ni, Cr and Mg show distinct variation, while incompatible elements such as Na and K are relatively similar. These rocks behave in three ways against to stresses including ductile, ductile-brittle and brittle deformation mechanism. The first and the second ones are associated with small or without any earthquakes, while the latter, led to small and large earthquakes. All of the above structural features are distinguishable in different scales. Distributed ductile structures in SERPENTINITE of Baft colored melange result in movements along major faults of Baft and Shahr-e-Babak become amortize to some noticeable extent. This is also confirmed by earthquake statistics of this region. Regarding the obtained results, we can predict that in the future, if these SERPENTINITEs are subjected to stress, there won’t probably be any tremendous earthquakes in this region.
