Tailor-made star-shaped polystyrene copolymer by controlled polymerization

Abstract

 In this study, we report the synthesis and Characterization of tailor-made star-shaped Polystyrene Copolymers via living anionic polymerization. By employing a Controlled Polymerization approach, star-shaped architectures with precise molecular weight distribution and well-defined arm numbers were successfully achieved. The synthesis involved the utilization of alkyl-lithium initiators and carefully optimized reaction conditions to ensure the living nature of the polymerization process. Detailed analysis of the synthesized Copolymers was conducted using gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, confirming the formation of highly uniform star-shaped structures with nattow molecular weight distribution. The effect of various reaction parameters, including the initiator-to-monomer ratio and the type of linking agents, was systematically investigated to tailor the Copolymer properties. These star-shaped styrene-based Copolymers with different cores highlights the versatility of living anionic polymerization in designing complex macromolecular architectures and paves the way for the development of novel polymeric materials with customizable properties.
