Evaluation of starch-based hydrogels properties for biomedical engineering applications

Abstract

hydrogels are kind of three-dimensional polymer networks with significant water absorption capacity. Due to the potential of using hydrogels in various fields such as biomedical, pharmaceutical, personal care products, biosensors and cosmetics applications, it has become a very popular research field in recent decades. hydrogels made of synthetic polymers and petrochemicals are not eco-friendly materials. Therefore, most of the Natural polysaccharides such as starch are used for the preparation of biodegradable hydrogels. starch has a large number of hydroxyl groups in its structure that can help the formation of hydrogel networks. Because of their availability and easy application, starch-based hydrogels (SHs) have attracted many attentions. In addition, starch-based hydrogels are non-toxic, biocompatible and low cost. For these reasons, starch-based hydrogels can be alternatives for synthetic hydrogels. This article, reviews the definition of hydrogel and its synthesizing methods and provide a comprehensive summary of starch structure and characteristics, starch-based hydrogels preparation methods, evaluating SHs properties and their applications in the field of biomedical engineering.
