Title

Ibn Al-Ridha (a) in Confronting the Tensions within the Organization of Deputation

Pages

  151-175

Abstract

The Organization of Deputation (Sāzmān-e Wikāla) was a network of interconnected representatives (wakīls) established during the era of the Imams’ physical presence, tasked with managing the affairs of the Shia community in relation to the Imams. During the period of the Imams known as Ibn al-Ridha (The Three Sons of Imam Reza) (a)—due to the specific socio-political conditions of their Imamate—this organization entered a new phase of activity. The central question of this study is: What tensions did the Organization of Deputation face during the time of the Sons of al-Ridha (a), and what strategies did these three Imams adopt to overcome these challenges? To answer this question, relevant data regarding the deputies of the Imams from historical, hadith, and biographical sources were collected and examined using a descriptive-analytical method. The findings show that, structurally, the secrecy of the organization, its financial role, and the wide geographical scope of its operations were among the sources of tension. On the human level, ideological deviations, false claims, and internal disputes among the deputies also contributed to the conflicts. The Imams of this period used preventive strategies such as defining clear responsibilities, ensuring accessibility, and maintaining hierarchical order. In dealing with active tensions, they employed corrective measures including replacing agents, public disclosure, and reprimanding offenders.
