Abstract

After Neogene transgression of Caspian Sea it has been in regression as of Quaternary time and its southern parts became and changed shape to a deep trough. This change in morphology has caused accumulation of Neogene and Quaternary sediments to reach a thickness of about 10000 meters. As a consequence of this regression coastal bars have emerged from water as coastal sand dunes containing shells of mollusca with fine bedding intricate layers. On the hilly side's of sand dunes meteoric waters along with running waters of tributaries have accumulated and had formed the lagoons, the Anzali and AmirKolaieh Lagoon of Lahijan area are the two prominent examples of such still water accumulation.
