Title

DETERMINATION OF OPTIMUM CROPPING PATTERN CONSIDERING AGRICULTURAL WATER MANAGEMENT ISSUE IN THE AGHILI-GOTVAND IRRIGATION PROJECT

Pages

  53-59

Abstract

Water scarcity and competition for water usage in various agricultural, municipal and industrial sectors have decreased the amount of water needed for irrigating agricultural crops. On the other hand, limitations of the soil and water resources with respect to the geographical and climatologic situations, have resulted in appropriate and optimum exploitation of the existing soil and water resources. The objectives of the present study were to maximize the economical benefits and to estimate the amount of water needed for various time series and also to optimize the CROPPING PATTERN in Aghili-Gotvand irrigation project. To perform this, a biophysical model (water requirement estimation) and an economical model (linear programming) were used. The necessary data were collected from various sources and used to run the model. The model estimated the total amount of the required water and the net amount of water for agricultural crops considering crop characteristics, local climate and soil type for irrigation efficiency of 45 percent. Results of the study indicated that the existing CROPPING PATTERN is not suitable, and it is possible to optimize the local CROPPING PATTERN by changing the percentage of the agricultural crop coverage and increasing the amount of WATER STORAGE.
