Abstract

In the present study, a new method of CARBON MOLECULAR SIEVE preparation is presented in which two-step carbon deposition process on a commercial activated carbon support has been employed. In the first preparation step, hydrocarbons present in coal tar pitch were used for carbon deposition and in the second stage, thermal decomposition of benzene vapor were applied to reduce pore diameters of the activated carbons to the desired value. The experimental results show that in the first hydrocarbon decomposition step, a homogeneous microstructure carbon with an average pore size of 5Å is produced. Later on and in the second stage, pore diameters in the product are reduced to about 4Å that is suitable for kinetic separation of oxygen from nitrogen. The effect of temperature and time of benzene decomposition on adsorption selectivity of molecular sieve products are also studied.
