Title

INVESTIGATION OF CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF GAS EXHALATION AND POST VOLCANIC ACTIVITIES OF TAFTAN VOLCANO, SE IRAN

Pages

  50-58

Abstract

TAFTAN VOLCANOlocated in the SE of Iran, releases significant VOLCANIC GASes during fumarolic activities. Post volcanic activities in Taftan are very rigorous, and they are in three types: fumaroles, solfatara and thermal springs. Fumarolic emission and solfataras which have high temperature over all involve gas discharges from the Taftan crater. Furthermore, fumarolic activities in Taftan have caused altered old lava and pyroclastic rocks. Chemical composition of springs waters in Taftan are genetically influenced by the fumarolic gases which are the main factor of waters contamination. SULFUR is the most common element in fumarolic gases; its concentration is 860 mg/L in one analyzed sample. The existence of H2SO4 causes high acidic pH (1.65) in gas exhalation in Taftan. Presence of this composition is as the result of high Oxygen fugacity in magma chamber of Taftan that the opacities hornblends in Taftan ignimbrite support it. The relatively high concentrations of boron in the Taftan thermal waters also indicate a relatively young geothermal system. Furthermore Taftan magmatic gases contain 0.672 mg/L ARSENIC. Construction of Eh-pH diagram for SULFUR & ARSENIC reveals that the HSO4- and As (III) ions are the predominant species for both of these elements respectively. As (III) is the most hazardous type of ARSENIC.
