STUDY OF THE IMPACT OF BLADE AND FEED RATE ON RICE QUALITY IN FRICTION-TYPE WHITENING MACHINE

Abstract

 To study the effects of BLADE and FEED RATE factors on rice quality, an experimental friction-type whitening machine was designed and constructed. This machine has two BLADEs with adjustable distances from the agitator. Rice FEED RATE is also adjustable. Three levels of rice FEED RATE (150, 200 and 250 kg/hr), three BLADE combination (left BLADE, right BLADE and double BLADE) and four BLADE distances from the agitator (5, 8, 11 and 15 mm) were studied. A factorial randomized block design was used to analyze the quality of rice whitening machine. In this experiment, the percentage of whitening and breakage of Sazandegi Line 213 rice variety were measured It was found that the main effect of all the experimental factors on the percentage of rice whitening and breakage were statistically significant at 1% level. The WHITENING INDEX was used to select the best working condition of the machine. The results indicated that the best condition was at 250 kg/hr rice FEED RATE and with the left BLADE at a distance of 5 mm from the agitator. Also the preliminary experiment has shown that the ratio of whitening to breakage in the designed machine was higher than the existing friction-type model.
