INVESTIGATION OF CRACK GROWTH IN THIN TO BE UNDER GASEOUS DETONATION USING FINITE GLEMENT METHOD

Abstract

 This paper reports the growth analysis of a preexisting axial external surface crack in a thin cylindrical tube under gas detonation loading using the finite element method. The loading consists of a shock wave with pressure peak of 6 MPa that travels at 2.4 km/s. First, numerical modeling of the structural response of the tube to detonation loading was performed using WARP3D, which is a 3D nonlinear-dynamic fracture simulation code using FEM. Modeling of CRACK GROWTH in the thin-walled tube was based on CTOA as the fracture parameter. The final part of the paper is devoted to comparisions between the numerical CRACK GROWTH simulations and the experimental results reported in the literature. The differences between the full dynamic and the quasi static CRACK GROWTH simulations are highlighted.
