Abstract

A SOLID STATE FERMENTATION system for the production of ETHANOL from APPLE POMACE with an efficient strain of SACCHAROMYCES CEREVISIAE is described. The yield of ETHANOL ranges from about 20g to more than 30g per kg of APPLE POMACE, depending on the fermentation condition and pretreatment of substrate. Separation of ETHANOL from fermented APPLE POMACE was achieved with evaporator. This research indicates that optimum inoculum size, moisture content, initial ,sugar concentration and nitrogen source content are, 108 cell/kg, 75 (w/w)%, 26 (w/w)% and 1 (w/w)%, respectively. Under these conditions the yield of ETHANOL production was 2.5 (w/w)% and 8 (w/w)% without and with SACCHARIFICATION. The results of this study indicate that the alcoholic fermentation of APPLE POMACE is an efficient method alleviating waste disposal with the concomitant production of ETHANOL.
