Abstract

ndustrial towns have been created aiming at industrializing countries and preventing the destructive effects of industries on the human environment by concentrating them in a specific area. Despite their long history since they were first established in Iran, INDUSTRIAL TOWNs have not been successful as they were expected because of one main reason, among many: inappropriate SITE SELECTION. This research has been performed on appropriate locating of INDUSTRIAL TOWNs in the COASTAL AREAS of Mazandaran Province (Tonekabon City), Iran using the GENETIC ALGORITHM which is an integrated function of various GIS spatial analyses, and enables the optimum SITE SELECTION through input maps and integrated operators. After an extensive study in the literature regarding the issue, the appropriate criteria were extracted, and the parameters affecting the locating of INDUSTRIAL TOWNs were determined and prepared to enter the genetic model along with the related information layers in the GIS and were placed in the objective functions. The intended objective functions were applied to the problem through a program designed for this purpose, and the appropriate sites for the construction of INDUSTRIAL TOWNs and the set of optimum solutions were produced. Finally, the corresponding points were specified on the map using the designed program
