Abstract

Biological reactions of the TWO-SPOTTED SPIDER MITE (TSS), Tetranychus urticae were studied on nine cultivars of TOMATOes, reared in the greenhouse of Khalat Poushan Research Station during 2005-2006.The spider mites were reared on leaf discs, taken from flowering stages of the host plants, in two incubators of the Acarology laboratory, Department of Plant Protection, University of Tabriz, Tabriz, Iran. Effect of feeding on TOMATO cultivars: Long shelf life and Meran (greenhouse cultivars) and Redclude, Western Red, Imperial, Yazd, Mazandaran, West Azarbaijan and Khorasan (cultivated cultivars) were measured on incubation period, total number of eggs produced, number of eggs per day, percentage of egg hatching, oviposition period, preoviposition period, post oviposition period, larval period, percentage of larval mortality, duration of protonymph development, percentage of protonymph mortality, duration of deutonymph development, percentage of deutonymph mortality, female life span, male life span, sex ratio (female/total) during two generations. The experiment was performed as split plot using randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. According to the statistical analysis, the order of TOMATO cultivars in terms of unsuitability to TSS was as: Mern, Yazd, Mazandaran, Khorasan, Imperial, Western Red, Long Shelf Life, West Azarbaijan and Redclude. According to cluster analysis at first and second generations of mite, Redclude, West Azarbaijan, Long Self Life, Western Red and Imperial appeared to be suitable hosts and Mazandaran, Khorasan, Yazd and Meran were regarded unsuitable.
