Abstract

Background and Objective: Drug abuse and addiction is a major health problem worldwide. It is reported that 16.2% of all drug addicts in Iran are injection drug users) IDUs (and INFECTION is one of the serious complications of drug injection by addicted persons. Diverse CLINICAL SYNDROMES could occur in injection drug user’s .Recognition of clinical patterns and etiologic agents of these INFECTIONs which are affected by socioeconomic factors have an important role in treatment and control of INFECTION among IDUs. The aim of this current study has survey of effects to determine the CLINICAL SYNDROMES and etiologic agents of bacterial INFECTIONs among IDUs.Materials and Methods: All IDU patients with bacterial INFECTIONs who were hospitalized at Boo-Ali Sina Hospital) the referral center for infectious diseases in Qazvin province (in the period during 1988 to 2007 were included in the study .Data were collected from hospital records, retrospectively. Results: A total of 125) 123 males and 3 females (IDUs were hospitalized over 10 year .The most common clinical syndrome of bacterial INFECTIONs was skin and soft tissue INFECTIONs) 80/64 (%followed by infective thrombophlebitis (12/9.4)%, and septic arthritis (6/4.8 .)%Also, the most prevalent bacterial pathogen was staphylococcus aureus 21 cases (52.5 )% with 15 isolates as MSSA and 6 MRSA with Pseudomonas aeruginosa (5/12.5 )%as the second most common pathogen. Conclusion: Injection drug-associated addiction especially when continues over a long period of time, can increase the risk of INFECTIONs. Skin and soft tissue abscesses are among the most common types of morbidity among IDUs.
