Abstract

The spread of mercury in a mercury-polluted river in Fars province, Iran has been
studied. The source of pollution is a chlor-alkali plant nearby. The results of experiments
indicate that some of the reactive mercury is changed into organomercurials by
microorganisms. The major transformation process of mercury occurs in the bed sediments.
Organomercurials are released from bed sediments into the river water because of low
adsorption characteristics of solid matter. The release of some surfactants by sugar mill waste
into the river causes a local increase of mercury in the water. Also a decrease in organic
mercury in the bed sediment at the end of the reach is obvious, which may indicate a
desorption process via surfactants.
