Abstract

In this study, PRODUCTIVITY of labor, capital stock, energy and growth of total factor PRODUCTIVITY in AGRICULTURAL SECTOR of Iran were estimated during 1976-2001. In order to estimate the PRODUCTIVITY of factors (labor, capital stock and energy), the Generalized Average PRODUCTIVITY and to estimate the growth of total factor PRODUCTIVITY, the absolute method of time series data were utilized. In order to utilize these methods, production function of AGRICULTURAL SECTOR was estimated by using ARDL. The results showed that the PRODUCTIVITY of labor in the sector had an upward trend during 1976-2001 indicating growth and improvement of labor in AGRICULTURAL SECTOR. The PRODUCTIVITY of energy had a downward trend up to 1989 and after that it had an upward trend due to the optimized and effective utilization. The PRODUCTIVITY of capital stock had an upward trend up to 1989 but it decreased during the postwar era which was mainly due to the vacant capacities and lack of effective use of capital stock. The growth of total factor PRODUCTIVITY in AGRICULTURAL SECTOR during this period highly fluctuated and its average was 2.5%. This showed the appropriate growth in PRODUCTIVITY and function of AGRICULTURAL SECTOR. In relation to the objectives of the Fourth Development Plan, it seems that growth of labor and total factors PRODUCTIVITY is accessible but growth of the capital PRODUCTIVITY by 7% needs an optimal utilization of capital and an adoption of sound policies in AGRICULTURAL SECTOR.
