Abstract

 Brassinosteroids are phytohormones possessing a wide spectrum of anti-stress activity. The effects of 24-epibrassinolise on seed GERMINATION, seedling growth, lipid peroxidation, proline, protein and reducing sugar content were investigated in canola (Brassica napus L. cv. Fusia) seedlings under WATER STRESS. Patterns of seedling proteins were separated on SDS-PAGE gels. The seeds and seedlings of each group were grown in distilled water, 10-8 M 24-EPIBRASSINOLIDE, PEG or PEG+24-rpibrassinolide solutions. Epibrassinolide alleviated the inhibitory effect of WATER STRESS on GERMINATION of canola seeds. Epibrassinolide caused a significant increase in epicotyl and root length of canola seedlings of both control and WATER STRESS treated plants. Protein content increased by epibrassinolide application even in those plants which were under WATER STRESS. Lipid peroxidation level and prolin content significantly increased under WATER STRESS but decreased with epibrassinolise application. In addition, the soluble sugar content of epibrassinolide-treated plant under WATER STRESS was higher than untreated plants. 19, 21, 31, 35, 82 and 102 KD band of polypeptides were more condensed when compared with control, while polypeptides 21, 31 and 50 KD were concentrated  in those plants which were treated with epibrassinolide. Epibrassinolide treatment considerably alleviated oxidative damage caused by WATER STRESS and improved seedling growth and seed GERMINATION under WATER STRESS.
