Title

THE EFFECT OF SOME GROWTH REGULATORS ON DORMANCY BREAKING OF FERULA OVINA BOISS

Pages

Abstract

Ferula ovina is forage species belonging to Apiaceae. Due to regular cutting and over exploitation, its natural spreads have become endangered. Seeds of this species have dormancy as well as possibility of propagation and the natural regeneration of this species through seed is very poor. Thus, investigating the length of primary dormancy and effective factors in dormancy breaking and optimal condition of seed germination seems necessary for recovery of natural spread of this plant. In this research, thus, a factorial experiment in a completely randomized design with 3 replicates was performed in order to evaluate the effect of different kinds, various concentrations and duration hormones on the enhancement of seed germination percentage of FERULA OVINA. Ferula seeds were treated with concentrations of 125, 250, 500, 1000, 2000 mg/L from IAA, IBA, Ki and GA3 at durations of 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 h. The results of the study showed that soaking seeds in all hormone solutions ranging from 125 to 1000 PPM stimulated Ferula seed germination significantly compared to controls (without hormone treatment). Seed germination by these concentrations of hormones was enhanced to increase in the period from 10 to 50 hrs of soaking. But, the induction of seed germination with these hormones decreased at 2000 mg/L for IBA, Ki and GA3 and at 1000 mg/L for IAA and it was significantly low at prolonged period of soaking. The results of germination tests revealed 20h soaking in 500mg/L GA3 had the beneficial effects over the rest of treatments. Based on results of the present study, GA3 treated seeds showed only 35% germination. Thus, the present methodology should be improved for use in recovery and conservation of FERULA OVINA probably by other treatments such as combination of GA3 with cold stratification.
