Abstract

Review of the veterinary literature showed that there is a paucity of information in bovine cardiovascular system. Therefore, two research projects have carried out in our institute in order to provide some more information in bovine cardiology. ECG recorded on a base apex lead from 952 clinically healthy Holstein CATTLE. This research work revealed that pathological ARRHYTHMIAs are uncommon in CATTLE. However, functional ARRHYTHMIAs are more common (21.21 %). No case of atrial fibrillation and 2nd degree AVB observed in our study in contrast of previous report on high producing CATTLE. Three hundred clinically healthy CATTLE chosen randomly from 12 farms auscultated for finding the prevalence of the third and fourth HEART sounds and cardiac MURMURs. Cardiac MURMURs detected in 47.7 % of CATTLE. All of the MURMURs were in the range of functional MURMURs as none of the CATTLE showed any sign of HEART diseases. The prevalence of the third and fourth HEART sounds among 300 CATTLE was 8.7% and 29.3%, respectively. This finding is the first report about the prevalence of the third and fourth HEART sounds in CATTLE as far as we can state from the English literature. Our studies in the last 10 years on bovine cardiovascular system showed that clinically healthy CATTLE might have some physiological ARRHYTHMIAs and MURMURs. Physiological ARRHYTHMIAs are less common in CATTLE compared with horses.
