Title

YIELD COMPONENTS IN SOYBEAN (GLYCINE MAX (L.) MERR.) AFTER SELECTION BASED ON MAIN STEM SEED YIELD

Abstract

 Determination of the contribution of growth parameters to seed yield, estimation of the ideotype characteristics and determination of most suitable PLANTING DATE of SOYBEAN was performed in 1996 at the Ghahderijan Service Center of lsfahan. For this purpose, five indeterminate type cultivars namely Williams, Wood Worth, Zane belonging to maturity group III and Hack and Black - Hawk belonging to maturity group II were selected based on main stem seed yield from other experiments. Cultivars in four PLANTING DATEs (26th April, 6th May, 16th May and 27th May) in a latin square design with split plot distribution were evaluated. Dates of planting and cultivars were considered as main plots and sub plots, respectively. Coefficients of correlation between traits and the linear stepwise regression of plant seed yield on other traits were calculated. Number of seeds per lateral branches had the highest correlation with plant seed yield and expressed the most variance of plant seed yield in stepwise regression equation. Path coefficient analysis was performed based on the variables that entered to final stage of regression equation including number of seeds per lateral branches, number of nodes per main stem, number of pods per each node of main stem, 1000 kernel weight, number of lateral branches per plant, length of lateral branch and number of pods per each node of lateral branch. Number of seeds per lateral branches had the highest positive direct effect on plant yield and indirect effects on number of lateral branches in plant, length of lateral branch and number of pods per each node of lateral branch via number of seeds per lateral branches. Thus, in breeding programs to increase seed yield of these verities, crossing between these verities and those with high number of seeds per lateral branches would be successful. For this purpose, many lateral branches and many number of pods per each node of lateral branch are essential.
