Abstract

Introduction: brucellosis is still prevalent in many developing countries including Iran .It can involve human beings due to occupation or ingestion of unpasteurized dairy products .Brucellosis has protean manifestations including hematologic abnormalities such as anemia, leucopenia commonly and pancytopenia and thrombocytopenia less frequently. This causes delay in diagnosis and consequently more complications. To find the frequency of hematologic abnormalities in brucellosis patients, we did a retrospective study in Yazd district.Methods and patients: records of brucellosis patients who had been admitted in general hospitals in Yazd district from March 2003 to March 2010 were evaluated for demographic, clinical and laboratory characteristics. The diagnosis of brucellosis was made with compatible clinical findings, positive Brucella agglutination titer ³1/160. Hematologic findings including anemia, leucopenia and thrombocytopenia were evaluated. Anemia was defined as hemoglobin <13 gr/dl in men and<than 12gr/dl in women due to WHO definition.Results: Two hundred thirty eight patients diagnosed as brucellosis were reviewed (137 male and 101 female). Mean of age of patients was 38.5±21.04 (range 2years to 80 years).Median was35year.Anemia was detected in 53/124of male patients (42.7%), and in35/86 of female patients (40.7%).Leucopenia (WBC<4300/mm3) was detected in 18(8.5%), and thrombocytopenia (platelets <150000) in 24 (13%) of patients.Conclusion: Brucellosis should be considered in differential diagnosis of disorders accompanied with anemia, leucopenia and thrombocytopenia.
