ASSIMILATION - FRACTIONAL CRYSTALLIZATION (AFC) IMPACT IN THE EVOLUTION OF TERTIARY ALKALI VOLCANISM IN TALEGHAN

Abstract

 Tertiary volcanism in the Taleghan area is marked by a thick sequence of ALKALI BASALTic volcanics that is followed by tephritic volcanics. Trace elements geochemistry of these volcanics indicates a postorogenic extensional geodynamic, possibly due to the continental collision following the subduction of the Arabian and the Iranian plates. This study suggests derivation of both volcanics from a single parental magma. Trace element modeling suggests derivation of this parental magma by 15% partial melting of a spinel–lherzolite source at the depth of 60 to 65 Km. The trace element systematic, along with petrographic evidence, suggests that 45 to 50 % fractional crystallization controlled the ALKALI BASALT evolutionary paths. The fractionating phases and their proportions are: clinopyroxene (45%) +olivine (25%) +plagioclase (25%) +magnetite (5%). Tephritic magma can be produced by about 65% fractional crystallization of the same mineral assemblages together with crustal contamination by amphibolites facies country rocks. Assimilation-fractional crystallization (AFC) modeling reveals significant but variable degrees of crustal contamination in the evolution of the magma to product tephritic rocks with a range of r values (assimilation rate/crystallization rate) from 0.15 to 0.45.
