Abstract

A gram-positive bacterium isolated from gasoline- soil in Isfahan which can grow on DIBENZOTHIOPHENE (DBT) as sole source of sulfur. This strain that was identified a strain of the genus RHODOCOCCUS by biochemical tests, could efficiently desulfurize DBT, a model organosulfur compound that exists in crude oil. The DESULFURIZATION product of DBT was identified as 2-HYDROXYBIPHENYL (2-HBP) by Gibbs reagent. The DBT content of basal salt medium (BSM) supplemented with glucose and DBT as sole carbon and sulfur sources respectively, was reduced by 100% after 100 h incubation with this strain at 30oC.
