Abstract

Product design that provides aesthetic appeal, pleasure and satisfaction can greatly influence the success of a product. In the last two decades many methodologies have been developed to facilitate the integration of affective aspects, such as emotion and consumer perceptions. Hence, today emotional design is beginning to occupy a critical role in product design. On the other hand in the area of consumerism, products need to evoke the right emotions within the user to differentiate from other products. Kansei engineering is the first and foremost product development methodology (as a new ergonomic consumer-oriented technology), which translates customer's impressions, feelings and demands on existing products or concepts to design parameters. It is based on subjective estimations of psychophysical feeling of products and concept properties and helps customers to express their demands on the product. The method creates a common vocabulary to ease the collaboration between specialists from different field like humanities, social and natural science, marketing, engineering, industrial design, psychology, physiology, etc. A great benefit of kansei engineering is that it can be used to link a variety of product properties to product emotion with consider of all affective aspects of human in design process. It has been applied with great success in the automotive industry, and in the design of a variety of consumer products and software systems. The purpose of this paper is to introduce and understand the basic idea, concept, methods and tools in kansei engineering. Finding the structural of kansei engineering related with product and design, will give us important ideas how to create pleasant products for human being. Using this new methodology companies can develop products or services that meet or exceed the customer's affective requirements and contribute toward delighting them further.
