Abstract

 Gametogenesis in cultured grey mullet (Mugil cephalus) was investigated using the OVARY sections in various stages. The OVARY and its OOCYTEs development was classified into six stages.In stage I or immature, the OOCYTEs were located in ovigerous lamellae, with a big nucleus (in October). In stage II, the globular yolk nucleus and increased nucleoli around the nuclear membrane were noticed (late October to mid November). In stage III, the OOCYTEs entered the primary vitellogenesis stages, produced vacuoles, and the zona radiata located around them (mid December). The fourth stage (IV) was associated with completion of vacuoles, appearance of crenate nucleus, and also completon of vitellogenesis (late December). The OOCYTEs were matured in this stage. In stage (V), the OOCYTEs showed the maximum growth and the nucleus migrated towards the animal pole of the cell. Spawning happened in this stage. The sixth stage (VI) is after spawning, during which the unevacuated OOCYTEs underwent atresia.According to the rather simultaneous development of the OVARY in cultured grey mullet, it can spawn only once a year. The peak of spawning is in mid to late January, and the maximum rate of GSI was exactly before spawning.
