Abstract

In 1997 samples of WATER and SEDIMENT were collected from GOMISHAN WETLAND in 35 kilometers of the north-east of Gorgan during six months. It was very important to know the current level of hydrocarbons which might have been due to natural spill of crude oil and gas and naturally menaced some parts of the ecosystem. Sampling range of area was from WETLAND entrance to the border of Iran and Turkmanestan. There were 9 transects for investigation. After preparing the samples, THC was determined by the standard methods and infrared spectrophotometry. There was no correlation between THC in WATER and SEDIMENT in all of the levels and models: linear, quadratic, qubic, logistic and exponential. Also for none of the seasons there was any significant difference between THC in WATER and SEDIMENT. However, 3 levels of OIL POLLUTION could be distinguished through cluster analysis. There were some presuppositions for the existence of natural-mud spas in the north bed of the WETLAND, because, just in that area a large amount of hydrocarbons in the bed is identified. Roach (Rutilu rntilus caspicus) and perch (S. lucioperca) are valuable fishes which were under the exposure of the pollution.
