Title

ECOLOGICAL STUDY OF WATERFOWLS IN GOMISHAN WETLAND

Pages

  83-103

Abstract

The WATERFOWLS' survival is due to the conservation and sustainable utilization of WETLANDs, and such sustainable use would not be possible in the absence of ecological studies. GOMISHAN WETLAND is of prime importance for WATERFOWLS. So this WETLAND is recognized as an "Important Bird Area" in the global scale. In this paper, the annual changes of the populations of the waterfowl's species are given. Also, from the beginning of March 1998, for a continuous 12 months, total count of the WATERFOWLS was down. The WATERFOWLS of this WETLAND from the migration point of view are divided into four categories. The WATERFOWLS, according to their species and populations, are divided into the three different ecosystems of the WETLAND. The Eastern ecosystem of the WETLAND is supporting the most population (%75) of the WATERFOWLS, the Middle Open Water ecosystem and the Western Reed bed ecosystem, are supporting 14% and 11%, respectively of the WATERFOWLS. Four of the species are found in the global threatened red list, and the wintering populations of the 20 species of the GOMISHAN site, in some years, are observed more than 1% of the global populations. The waterfowl Species Diversity and Similarity Indices are given also.
