Abstract

In metropoltion cities heavy traffic in free ways and the high speed at which the vehicles move along have made traffic as one of the most important sources of environmental NOISE POLLUTION. According to the latest data available no comprehensive study on traffic noise attenuation in the freeways of Tehran has ever been performed. So far it is the first time the level of traffic NOISE POLLUTION in sheykh Fazlollah Noori Freeway (Tehran) has been measured and as a result the probable methods to control and attenuate the traffic noise are suggested. In this cross sectional study, measurement stations were selected, then by using a SOUND LEVEL METER on different days of the week the EQUIVALENT SOUND PRESSURE LEVEL was measured. The stations were selected in residential areas near the Freeway. The results showed that the noise levels were higher than the suggested permitted levels. So noise attenuation and control in this route is necessary. One of the most common methods in open air environments for the attenuation of sound level is to install NOISE BARRIERS. The design of such barriers for residential areas near the Freeway has been based on certain geometric and FRESNEL NUMBER relations to determine the barrier height, length and distance from the noise source and the residential buildings.
