Abstract

The basis of the NITROGEN TAX is that landfill operators pay a levy when the wastes are deposited, sufficient to cover costs associated with managing their long term polluting potential. To provide a clear financial incentive, the value of the rebate would be set at a level that exceeds the costs of treatment.Much of the research has identified that it is ammoniacal nitrogen that poses the longest term threat to the environment, through the risk of water POLLUTION. If the ammoniacal nitrogen has been sufficiently flushed, it may be assumed that other leachate components will already have reached concentrations compatible with the surrounding environment. The' NITROGEN TAX should be based on the true cost of flushing and treating the nitrogen pollutants from landfills, with an added premium to provide the financial incentive and to cover administration costs. This study has been done for Kahrisak LAND FILL site.
