CFD SIMULATION OF NON-NEWTONIAN FLUID FLOW THROUGH A RIBBED TAPERED TUBE

Abstract

 INVESTIGATION OF NON-NEWTONIAN FLUID FLOW THROUGH A TAPERED TUBE IS IMPORTANT FOR ATOMIZATION AND EXTRUSTION OF NON-NEWTONIAN FLUID LIKE POLYMERIC AND PARTICULATE FLUIDS. IN THIS ARTICLE, THE EFFECTS OF VARIATIONS SURFACE GEOMETRY OF THE TAPERED TUBE BY USING OF AN CICULAR RIB SHAPE LIKE O-RING THAT IS VERTICAL TO AXIS OF TUBE HAS BEEN INVESTIGATED. THE NON-NEWTONIAN FLUID OBEYS THE MODIFIED HERSCHEL–BULKLEY BEHAVIOR. THE FINITE VOLUME METHODS HAVE BEEN USED TO DISCRETISE THE PARTIAL DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS OF THE MODEL USING THE SIMPLE METHOD FOR PRESSURE–VELOCITY COUPLING AND THE SECOND-ORDER UPWIND SCHEME TO INTERPOLATE THE VARIABLES ON THE SURFACE OF THE CONTROL VOLUME. INFLUENCE OF OPERATIONAL AND GEOMETRICAL PARAMETERS ON APPARENT VISCOSITY OF FLUID AT DIE OUTLET HAVE BEEN DISCUSSED. COMPUTATIONAL RESULTS SHOW THAT ADDITION OF VERTICAL O-RING IN TAPERED TUBE IN SUITABLE POSITIONS CAUSES CONSIDERABLE DECREASE IN APPARENT VISCOSITY AT DIE OUTLET.
