Abstract

 THE INCREASING USE OF UNDERGROUND TRANSPORTATION AND NECESSITY FOR NEW WATER CONVEYING AND LONG TUNNELS HAS CAUSED TO DEVELOPMENT OF TUNNEL BORING MACHINES (TBM’S). MANY PARAMETERS SUCH AS GEOLOGICAL CONDITIONS, ROCK MASS PROPERTIES, ROUTE DIP AND THE UTILIZED MACHINE’S CHARACTERISTICS CAN INFLUENCE THE PERFORMANCE OF TBM’S. ONE OF THE PRINCIPAL METHODS TO PREDICT THE PERFORMANCE OF MACHINES IS TO ESTIMATE THE PERFOMANCE PARAMTERES CONSISTING OF RATE OF PENETRATION, ADVANCE RATE AND UTILIZATION FACTOR. IN THIS RESEARCH, THE FIELD PENETRATION INDEX (FPI) HAS BEEN UTILIZED FOR THE MAIN PERFORMANCE PARAMETER IN KARAJ WATER CONVEYING TUNNEL. THE FINAL PREDICTION MODEL DEVELOPED IN THIS STUDY POSSESSES A CORRELATION COEFFICIENT OF 0.73 WHICH IS EVALUATED AS A BETTER MODEL COMPARED TO THE SIMILAR PREVIOUS MODELS.
