Abstract

 CARBOXYMETHYL CELLULOSE (CMC) IS A VALUABLE COMMERCIAL POLYMER WHICH DERIVATES FROM NATURAL CELLULOSE WITH MANY APPLICATION IN INDUSTRY. THIS PAPER EXPLORES THE PRODUCTION OF SODIUM CARBOXYMETHYL CELLULOSE (CMCS) FROM COTTON LINTER BY A NEW TECHNIQUE. AT THE FIRST, ALPHA CELLULOSE PULP WITH AN AVERAGE DEGREE OF POLYMERIZATION OF 1800 WAS ALKALIZED BY A NON-HEATING EXTENDED MERCERIZATION STAGE. ETHERIFICATION WAS CARRIED OUT AT 55C DURING 4 HOUR. THE PREPARED CMC HAD AN APPARENT VISCOSITY OF 715 CP AND ITS DEGREE OF SUBSTITUTION (DS) WAS 0.9. THESE RESULTS CONFIRM THAT THIS TECHNIQUE IS ABLE TO PREPARE CMCS WITH HIGHER VISCOSITY COMPARING TO THE CONVENTIONAL TECHNIQUES.
