Title

USE OF MICROBIAL CALCITE PRECIPITATION FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF STRENGTH AND DURABILITY OF CONCRETE

Abstract

 CRACK IN CONCRETE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR CONTRIBUTING TO THE REDUCTION OF THE SERVICE LIFE OF CONCRETE STRUCTURES. COMPARED TO SYNTHETIC POLYMERS WHICH MIGHT BE HARMFUL TO THE ENVIRONMENT, BACTERIAL CACO3 PRECIPITATION IS MORE COMPATIBLE WITH THE CONCRETE MATRIX AND IS AN ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY CONCRETE REPAIR TECHNIQUE. THE BACTERIAL DEGRADATION OF UREA PROMOTES THE MICROBIAL DEPOSITION OF CARBONATE AS CALCIUM CARBONATE IN A CALCIUM RICH MEDIA AND THESE PRECIPITATED CRYSTALS ARE ABLE TO FILL THE CRACKS IN THE CONCRETE. IN THE PRESENT STUDY, THE TECHNIQUE OF MICROBIAL CALCITE PRECIPITATION WAS CONSIDERED FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF THE STRENGTH OF CONCRETE AND REDUCTION OF ITS SORPTIVITY COEFFICIENT. BIOLOGICAL TREATMENT USING SPOROSARCINA PASTEURII CELLS IN MORTAR CUBES SHOWED AROUND 17% IMPROVEMENT IN COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH WITH RESPECT TO CONTROL SPECIMENS. BIOLOGICAL CALCIUM CARBONATE COATING RESULTED IN A SIGNIFICANT DECREASE OF THE WATER UPTAKE COMPARED TO CONTROL SPECIMENS. SEM ANALYSIS CONFIRMED THE PRESENCE OF CALCITE INDUCED BY BACTERIA.
