Abstract

VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS ARE OFTEN DEVASTATING EVENTS THAT HAVE A HUGE IMPACT ON NATURE AND HUMAN LIFE, AND THEREFORE ON SUSTAINABLE URBAN DEVELOPMENT. IN ORDER TO REDUCE THE EFFECT OF VOLCANIC HAZARDS SUCH AS PYROCLASTIC FLOWS AND TSUNAMIS, PERMANENT MONITORING IS NECESSARY. DEFORMATION OF THE EARTH’S SURFACE AS A RELIABLE INDICATOR OF AN IMPENDING ERUPTION AND THUS THE IMAGE OF MAGMATIC PROCESSES DEEP UNDERGROUND HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED. IN THIS PAPER WE STUDY THE TECHNIQUES USED TO MONITOR VOLCANIC DEFORMATION AND THE PROGRESS THAT HAS BEEN MADE IN THIS AREA DISCUSSED FINALLY, SUGGESTIONS FOR BETTER INFRASTRUCTURE IS PROVIDED.
