DESIGNING THE PRIMARY SCHOOLS BASED ON EFFICIENCY AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT UTILIZING THE DAYLIGHT

Abstract

 AS MANY RESEARCHERS RECOMMEND, TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE NATURAL ELEMENTS SUCH AS DAY LIGHTING, AT THE ONSET OF THE ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN PROCESS IS ESSENTIAL FOR SUSTAINABLE BUILDINGS. IMPLEMENTATION OF SUCCESSFUL DAY LIGHTING STRATEGIES IN BUILDINGS DESIGNS GIVES RISE TO AN IMPROVEMENT IN THE SPATIAL QUALITY AND SAVES THE REQUIRED ENERGY; HOWEVER, THIS IS NOT TRUE FOR THE ARTIFICIAL LIGHT. DAY LIGHTING HAS BECOME A DESIGN MANDATE IN THE CASE OF CERTAIN SPACES, E.G. CLASSROOMS IN EDUCATIONAL BUILDINGS. MANY RESEARCHERS HAVE INDICATED A RELATION BETWEEN HOW CLASSROOMS ARE DESIGNED AND THE STUDENTS’ PERFORMANCE. THIS PAPER DISCUSSES A CASE STUDY OF THE NEWLY-BUILT PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN ISFAHAN, IRAN (SINCE 2005) WITH A MAJOR FOCUS ON PROVISION OF THE ADEQUATE DAY LIGHTING IN THE EDUCATIONAL SPACES UTILIZING THE NEW TECHNOLOGIES. A COMPREHENSIVE DAY LIGHTING EVALUATION WAS CONDUCTED ON ALL EDUCATIONAL FACILITIES OF THE PROPOSED CONCEPTUAL DESIGN. THE RECOMMENDATIONS FROM THIS EVALUATION WERE IMPLEMENTED IN THE DESIGN DEVELOPMENT STAGES. THE INITIAL CONCEPTUAL DESIGN DRAWINGS AS WELL AS THE FINAL DESIGNS ARE DESCRIBED. THE CURRENT PAPER SUMMARIZES THE DAY LIGHTING DESIGN RECOMMENDATIONS AND DESCRIBES THE DAY LIGHTING SIMULATION PROCESS AND ANALYSIS FOR DECISION MAKING IN DESIGN. IT ALSO INDICATES THE ANNUAL ENERGY SAVING AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AS A RESULT OF THE DAY LIGHTING-CONSCIOUS DESIGN OF THE CLASSROOMS.
