APPLICATION OF FERROFLUID FOR CONVECTIVE HEAT TRANSFER ENHANCEMENT IN MICRO GRAVITY CONDITIONS

Abstract

 THIS PAPER PROPOSES A COOLING METHOD THAT CAN BE USED FOR EFFICIENT HEAT REMOVAL IN MICRO-GRAVITY CONDITIONS OF A SPACECRAFT. THE METHOD IS BASED ON USING MAGNETIC NANOFLUIDS UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF AN EXTERNAL MAGNETIC FIELD. A NUMERICAL STUDY HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT IN ORDER TO STUDY THE EFFECT OF MAGNETIC FIELD ON THE 𝑓𝑒3𝑂4 NANOFLUID FLOW AND CONVECTIVE HEAT TRANSFER IN A HEATED CHANNEL. IT IS OBSERVED THAT THE MAGNETIC FIELD RESULTS IN CREATION OF RECIRCULATION ZONES WHICH AFFECT THE THERMAL BOUNDARY LAYER THICKNESS AND NUSSELT NUMBER. THE RESULTS ALSO SHOW THAT THE EFFECT OF MAGNETIC FIELD LOCATION ON THE NUSSELT NUMBER IS COMPLETELY DEPENDENT ON THE THERMAL BOUNDARY CONDITION. A MAXIMUM OF 49% ENHANCEMENT IN HEAT TRANSFER RATE HAS BEEN ACHIEVED BY APPLYING A MAGNETIC FIELD TO THE FERROFLUID.
