Abstract:

IN THE HYDROLYSIS/CATALYTIC TRANSESTERIFICATION OF BIODIESEL PRODUCTION, NEARLY 15% OF THE OIL AND FAT (AGRICULTURAL AND/OR ANIMAL) CONVERTED TO GLYCERIN AS A BY-PRODUCT. SINCE THE AMOUNT OF GLOBAL GLYCERIN PRODUCTION IS RELATIVELY HIGH THEN AN EFFECTIVE PROCESS FOR CONVERSION OF GLYCERIN TO USEFUL MATERIALS IS BOCOMING MORE IMPORTANT DURING THE LAST YEARS. SINCE HYDROTHEMAL REACTION IS A PROMINENT METHOD TO TREAT VARIOUS COMPOUNDS, IN THIS STUDY DECOMPOSITION OF GLYCERIN IN A HYDROTHERMAL REACTION USING SUB-CRITICAL WATER TECHNOLOGY WAS INVESTIGATED IN THE PRESENCE OF METAL IONS (COPPER/ZINC) AND ALKALINE (NAOH) AS A FUNCTION OF REACTION TEMPERATURE (448-673 K) AND REACTION TIME. THE OPTIMUM CONDITION TO PRODUCE SOME LOW MOLECULAR WEIGHT ORGANIC ACIDS (SUCH AS LACTIC ACID AND GLYCOLIC ACID) AS VALUABLE COMPOUNDS WAS DETERMINED AT 300 C.

Abstract:

Striae gravidarum is one of the most common skin manifestations of pregnancy. Considering its known complications and the folk belief on the efficacy of oily humectant substances in its prevention, and for evaluation of the effectiveness of almond oil, this study was performed in especial care unit for pregnancy of Imam Hossein hospital from 1998 to 1999. The clinical trial strategy and sequential sampling of this study was performed on 159 women after 4th months of first pregnancy and fat cases, patients with Cushing's disease and background diseases of skin, steroid consumers, women with multiple pregnancy, cases with polyhydraminus and/or macrosomal kind of pregnancy (a weight greater than 4 Kg) were excluded from the study. The patients were randomly divided into three groups, that is control group receiving no treatment, and case groups receiving 1 ml of almond oil or glycerine. The classification was mild for the presence of striae in the interval from symphysis pubis to navel that span at most V4 of abdomen, moderate for its existence in at most half the abdominal skin, and severe for its existence higher than navel and covering more than half of the abdominal skin. The X2 test was used for analysis of data. The groups, that is control (n=53), glycerin consumers (n=53), and almond oil consumers (n=50) were similar regarding pregnancy period and other causative factors. The rate of occurrence of stria gravidarum was 79.2% in control group and the occurrence of its severe form was 24% in this group. The rate of occurrence for the glycerine and almond oil groups were 9.4% and 7.5% respectively (P>0.009). Therefore, it is recommended to use almond oil to prevent the occurrence of stria gravidarum.

Background and purpose: The increasing effect of liquisolid systems on dissolution behavior of poor soluble drugs has been proved. In this research, the effect of glycerin, as a nonvolatile solvent, on release profile of indomethacin was evaluated.Materials and methods: The Avicel as carrier and silica as coating powder material in 20: 1 ratio were used. Indomethacin was dispersed in glycerin with different ratios. The binary mixtures of Avicel and silica were added to the mixture containing the drug and glycerin under continuous mixing. Starch as disintegrate was mixed with all formulations for a period of 10 minutes. After preparing several formulations, the release profiles were evaluated. To evaluate any interaction between indomethacin and the other components in liquisolid formulations, the differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) was used. Results: The results showed that liquisolid formulations exhibited significantly higher drug dissolution rates in comparison with directly compressed tablet. The enhanced rate of indomethacin dissolution from liquisolid tablets was probably due to an increase in wetting properties and surface area of drug particles available for dissolution. Also, it has been shown that the fraction of molecularly dispersed drug (FM) in the liquid medication of liquisolid systems was directly proportional to their indomethacin dissolution rate (DR). An attempt was made to correlate the percentage drug dissolved in 10-minutes with the solubility of indomethacin in glycerin. Conclusion: The liquisolid compacts technique can be a promising alternative for the formulation of water insoluble drugs, such as indomethacin into rapid release tablets.

Abstract:

Poly (Vinyl Alcohol) (PVA) films were prepared with AlCl3.6H2O/glycerin and AlCl3.6H2O/poly glycerin as two kinds of complex plasticizer. The micromorphology of pure PVA film and PVA films plasticized with complex plasticizer was observed by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The interaction between complex plasticizer and PVA molecules was investigated by Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The influence of complex plasticizer on crystalline, thermal and mechanical properties of PVA films was studied by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), ThermoGravimetric Analysis (TGA), and tensile tests, respectively. The results showed that both AlCl3.6H2O/glycerin and AlCl3.6H2O/poly glycerin complex plasticizers could interact with PVA molecular and then effectively destroy the crystals of PVA. PVA films plasticized with AlCl3.6H2O/glycerin and AlCl3.6H2O/poly glycerin complex plasticizers became soft and ductile, with lower tensile strength and higher elongation at break compared with pure PVA films. This is an important cause of plasticization of AlCl3.6H2O /glycerin and AlCl3.6H2O /poly glycerin on PVA films.

Abstract:

Background: Anolin, also known as wool wax, is an oily product secreted by the sebaceous glands beneath the skin of sheep. It possesses anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and skin-protecting properties, making it a potential agent for treating skin conditions, such as eczema. Objectives: This study evaluates the healing efficacy of lanolin in an experimental model of eczema induced in albino rats. The primary objective of this study is to assess the potent healing role of lanolin compared to glycerin in the treatment of acetone-induced eczema in albino rats. Specific aims include evaluating histopathological changes and measuring the reduction in inflammatory cells in the treated skin. Methods: A total of 48 mature albino rats (weighing 250-350 g) were randomly assigned to two groups, namely a control group and an eczema group induced by applying 99.9% pure acetone to shaved skin using cotton swabs. After three days of acetone application, the eczema group was further divided into two equal subgroups (16 rats each), treated with either glycerin or lanolin. After 24 h, five rats from each subgroup were sacrificed for initial assessment. The remaining rats continued their respective treatments for an additional 72 h before being sacrificed on the third day. Histopathological analysis was conducted to compare tissue sections of eczematous skin with control sections, focusing on changes in the epidermal layer, the presence of fissures and cracks, aggregation of inflammatory cells, keratinization, and skin color changes. Results: Histopathological examination revealed significant changes in the eczematous skin compared to control sections. These included noticeable thickening and elongation of the outermost skin layer, fissures, cracks in the epidermal layer due to skin dryness, and an aggregation of inflammatory cells. Additionally, keratinization of the epithelial layer and changes in skin color were observed. After 72 h of treatment, the lanolin group exhibited optimal healing effects compared to the glycerin group. The outermost layer of the skin returned to its normal length, and there was a marked decrease in the number of inflammatory cells in the lanolin-treated group. Conclusion: Lanolin has a superior healing effect compared to glycerin in the treatment of acetone-induced eczema in albino rats. Lanolin effectively restored the skin’s outermost layer to its normal length and significantly reduced the number of inflammatory cells, highlighting its potential as a therapeutic agent for eczema.

Abstract:

In order to improve patient's compliance in taking glycerine trinitrate (GTN) nylon hollow fiber which has been successfully used for release of chlorhexidine diacetate and levonorgestrel was employed to make nylon hollow fiber releasing GTN. Hollow nylon fibres of external diameter 0.63 mm, 75 mm long with an internal capacity of 16 µl, were filled with GTN (190 mg/ml) in 70% ethanol (v/v) or vehicle alone and the ends were heat-sealed. The fibers were then immersed in 10 ml of 0.9% (w/v) saline in a separating funnel. The GTN release pattern from fiber, the effect of the product on blood pressure and its potential dermal toxicity were assessed. The release of GTN from the fibres was approximately 2.7 µg/min when the fibres contained 16 mg of drug. The results showed that the amount of GTN within the single fibre was enough to reduce blood pressure significantly, while it did not show significant dermal toxicity. It is concluded that GTN fiber, if used as monofilament, is not an alternative method for GTN delivery.
