Abstract:

Nowadays, air pollution is one of the main challenges worldwide. There have been significant improvements in air quality dispersion modelling. AERMOD is one of these models which is based upon the Gaussian Model. However, AERMOD has some limitations in terms of data input and output. Therefore improving this model as well as developing new models adopted to our country is required to be addressed. The current research aims to develop a new model in MATLAB programming software. AERMOD and MATLAB were first investigated and then Atmospheric Dispersion Assessment Mapping Model (ADAMM) was proposed to displace AERMOD.To verify the ADAMM, results of modelling for identical pollution sites were compared. It was found that ADAMM overestimates concentrations of pollutants in comparison with AERMOD. However, ADAMM has some advantages in particular as a domestic model in different areas. It performs better in short distances (<5 km, r=0.53) than far apart. In addition ADAMM provides a user friendly environment to manipulate input and output data while reducing the simulation time. While AERMOD has specific file formats for its own input data, ADAMM follows commonly used formats such as Microsoft Excel. Data output in ADAMM is presented in different formats including MS Excel, ASCII, 2D and 3D. The other advantage of ADAMM is that it provides a single interface for all necessary operations such as data input, manipulating, modelling, and data output while a suite of modules are required to run AERMOD with each one performing a separated task.

Abstract:

Due to the important role in providing safe conditions for train movements, railway interlocking systems are considered as safety critical systems, hence it requires advanced formal modeling techniques and step-by-step development to ensure safety, quality and reliability of the system. State flow toolbox of MATLAB software is a convenient tool for formal design. In this paper, a new simulator of railway signaling and interlocking systems based on discrete-event dynamic is presented. with receiving the basic information about physical features and policies of railway network, this simulator models and simulates the interlocking system. The primary features of this simulator are facility in design and developing the interlocking system and its ability to test the new interlocking functions in it. The main innovation in this simulator is that the elements of the railway network are designed based on discrete-event dynamic and its ability to develop and communicate interlocking system with other railway traffic control systems. To evaluate the performance of the proposed simulator, we simulate the interlocking system of a railway station and line 2 of Tehran metro in this simulator.

Abstract:

Forward modeling is an integral part of every geophysical modeling resulting in the numerical simulation of responses for a given physical property model. This Forward procedure is helpful in geophysics both as a means to interpret data in a research setting and as a means to enhance physical understanding in an educational setting. Calculation of resistivity and induced polarization forward responses is carried out using simulation of the current flow into the earth’ s surface through solving the Poisson’ s equation. In this contribution, a finite-difference algorithm is applied to discretize the simulated models restricted by a mixed boundary condition. To account for the 3D source characteristic, a spatial Fourier transform of the partial differential equations with respect to a range of wave numbers is performed along the strike direction. Then, an inverse Fourier transformation is conducted to obtain the potential solutions in the spatial domain. The present package provides a user-friendly interface designed to understand and handle for various conventional electrical configurations in the frame of the MATLAB programming language. To verify the program, initial responses of some simple models are compared with those of analytic solutions, which proved satisfactory in terms of accuracy. For further evaluation, the code is also examined on some complicated models.

Abstract:

Primary and widely in use Computed Tomography (CT) dose descriptor is a volumetric CT Dose Index (CTDIv) that is usually measured by a pencil ionization chamber with active length of 100mm and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) phantom. CTDIv depends on scan parameters such as mAs, kV, collimation, tube rotation time but is independent of patient’s size and shape. For the purpose of a good estimation of dose received by the patients, American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) published the conversion factors for both 16 and 32cm (head and body phantoms respectively); through this, users can extract conversion factors according to lateral (LAT) and/or anterior-posterior (AP) sizes and calculate real CTDIv. Since this procedure is time consuming, we designed MATLAB-based software to reduce such calculations. To design the software, GUI toolbar of MATLAB software was used. To test the software, scan parameters of two patients for head and pelvis scan were read from PACS and lateral (LAT) and anterior-posterior (AP) sizes were measured. Finally, SSDEs were calculated for two patients by the software. The software can be measured based on AP and/or LAT measures and/or in special cases (under the age of 18) through patients’ age.

Abstract:

Background: Nowadays, EEG signals representing the electrical function of neurons in different parts of the human or animal brains, are the most powerful tool for diagnosis and research on the function of the brain and neurological system. The traditional method of observing the raw EEG signals is still the most common method used for analysis of these signals but it cannot be used for long time recorded EEG and its observation results are extremely dependent on the observer. The frequency components of the EEG signal and its variations in time are the most important variables for analyzing the signal, as for each part of the brain due to its function produces an electrical wave within a specific frequency range and the EEG signal is a summation on all these waves over the brain. Methods: In this paper a new method for analyzing and showing the information of EEG signals named the average frequency extraction method developed in MATLAB softwareenvironment is introduced. Results: In this new developed method, the frequency contents of the EEG signal; the maximum and average frequency are calculated using Fast Fourier transform in a selected portion of the signal, with the help of a specified length time window which slides forward through the time axis of the selected portion of the signal, and shown as color spectrums in which the variations in the color are proportional to the variations of the signals frequency parameters throughout time. The time window length and portion of the signal to be analyzed at a time can be altered by the user, allowing the capability of compressing the output spectrum in parts of the signal with slow frequency content variation as to fasten the analysis. Conclusion: The new developed method is a user friendly program that extracts and shows the frequency variations in a EEG signal in time providing the means of a more precise and fast analysis.

Background: Metal Artifact Reduction (MAR) is very important in terms of dose calculation and optimization accuracy in radiotherapy (RT). There are many MAR programs available commercially.  In this study, a MAR program was developed using MATLAB software (MATLAB-MAR), and the effect of the developed MATLAB-MAR on radiotherapy dose distribution was examined. Materials and Methods: In line with the purpose of the study, a phantom containing metal with a high atomic number (z=82) was created, and computer tomography (CT) of the phantom was taken. MAR developed with MATLAB software and a commercial metal artifact reduction (Smart-MAR) were applied on CT slices.  The Hounsfield unit (HU), visually, artefact size and gamma evaluation effects of MATLAB-MAR, Smart-MAR and Without-MAR slices in the CMS XiO planning systems. Results:  As a result of the study, the best visually and HU improvement was seen in MATLAB-MAR. Moreover, in the dose distribution evaluation made by gamma analysis, an improvement was observed in MATLAB-MAR. Conclusion: Although similar values were obtained with MATLAB-MAR and the commercial software, it was determined that MATLAB-MAR was more advantageous than the commercial software in terms of being cost-free, providing results in a shorter time, not requiring reconstruction, and being open to development.

Abstract:

Currently, the development of energy modeling on an urban scale is the goal of many types of research. These energy models are useful for understanding the amount of energy consumption. This research presents a dynamic energy modeling based on energy balance. Building specifications are taken from urban data. This model has been calibrated, optimized, and validated by considering Ardabil's climatic conditions and morphological parameters. The results of this work show that this model can be used with reasonable accuracy for old buildings. These data need to be improved for urban-scale analysis of new buildings. Based on field and statistical research conducted in Ardabil, Iran, which is the main focus of this report, this city's energy consumption during the past years can be achieved. The basis of this work is through statistics and the implementation of heat transfer equations in the form of electrical modeling. This modeling is done in MATLAB / Simulink software. The model is then optimized after simulation.

Abstract:

In the present study, the uranium qualitative detector package containing Arsenazo and Bromo-PADAP indicators was designed; and also, the metalic ion detector package using Dithizone Indicator was built for detection and determination of some ionic interference via Uranium colorimetric method. The obtained results indicated that the detection limits of Uranium ions were equal to 50 ppm and 20 ppm respectively using detectors containing Arsenazo and Bromo-PADAP indicators. In the acidic media (pH=5), the uranium detectors had good detection performance. The metalic ion detector detected ions such as cobalt (II), copper (II), nickel (II), zinc (II), cadmium and silver until the detection limit 50 ppm. Arsenazo detector was superior to Bromo-PADAP detector for detection of Uranium since it prevented any ionic interference even in very high concentrations which with absorbtion of a solution containing Uranium ion, Arsenazo and Bromo-PADAP detectors in the presence masking agents in buffer solution produced miry green and purple colors respectively. While the operation time for Uranium ion detection in the presence of Arsenazo and Bromo-PADAP detectors was3 minutes and 1 minute respectively. Also, the quantitative evaluations based on image processing methods using MATLAB software show that the experimental results are consistent with the evaluation results.
