Introduction: This study aimed, effect of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) on soft tissue healing after mandibular third molar surgery. Materials & Methods: In this semi-blinded clinical trial study, 30 selected patients requiring surgical extraction of soft tissue impacted mandibular third molar participated from cases referred to the Department of Surgery, Faculty of Dentistry, Isfahan Azad University 2017. Patients divided into both test and control groups. PRP was placed in the extracted socket of the test group, whereas the control group had no PRP. Arzhangian standard kit utilized for preparation of PRP. The outcome variables in this study were pain, swelling, inter incisal mouth opening, wound dehiscence, dry socket, bleeding, and tissue color. The collected data analyzed using statistical tests followed independent T-test, Mann-Whitney, and fisher (p value < 0. 05). Results: The mean postoperative pain score (Visual Analog Scale) lowered for the test group after several wound dehiscence on the third and seventh days after surgery which was statistically significant (p value < 0. 001). Although the mean bleeding time on the third day after surgery decreased in the test group, this difference was not statistically significant (p value = 0. 59). There were no statistically significant between both groups for The dry socket incidence on the seventh day and the mean of inter incisal mouth opening in the third and seventh days after surgery as well. Conclusion: The usage of topical PRP has beneficial advantages on soft tissue healing after mandibular third molar surgery. Unlike the control group, The PRP group provided reduced pain and better soft tissue healing.

Abstract:

In order to assess the impact of the various treatment approaches adopted to manage diabetes mellitus (DM) in Nigeria, one hundred and ninety-five fresh cases of DM were investigated. Fifty-five non-diabetic individuals in apparent good health were included as control subjects. The DM patients were separated into 3 groups depending on the treatment they received. Group 1: diet, 2: insulin, and 3: oral hypoglycemic drugs. Basal plasma fibrinogen concentration (PFC), relative plasma viscosity (RPV), packed cell volume (PCV), hemoglobin (Hb) concentration, plasma sodium and potassium levels were determined in both DM patients and control subjects by standard analytical procedures, and the results were compared with those obtained after about 6±1 (5-7) months of managing the ailment. The data indicate that after about 5-7 months treatment of the disease, PFC for group 1 patients (4.00±3.0g/L; n=75) and plasma sodium levels (130.0±4.6mmol/L: n=75; 134.2±3.2mmol/L: n=55; and 132.1±4.3mmol/L: n=65) for groups 1, 2 and 3 DM patients were demonstrated to be significantly different (P<0.05) when compared with control values (PFC=3.02±0.31g/L; sodium=142.3±3.2mmol/L: n=53) using the Student t-test. Results suggest poor control of DM by diet and drug, and this may be due to patients’ non-compliance to recommended diets and drug dosage. Since not all cases require insulin administration in the first instance, then ways of enforcing strict compliance should be explored and tested.

Background: We aimed to compare the effect of albumin 5% in half normal saline (half NS) versus normal saline (NS) infusion on the plasma viscosity in the near-normal physiological condition. According to the high oncotic pressure of albumin along with prolonged half-life of its molecules in comparison to NS in the intra-vascular compartment, it has been proposed that a more significant reduction of the plasma viscosity might be expected after the infusion of albumin. Methods: A total of 56 patients referring to the general operating room for their elective minor surgeries were evenly divided into two groups (V1, V2). It was calculated that 28 patients were needed to be enroll in each study group to detect a difference as big as 0.15 millipoise (mPa.s) with a statistical power of 80%. The V1 group received 1000 ml of NS but the V2 group received 1000 ml of recombinant albumin 5% in half NS within one hour, as fluid replacement therapy, during the intra-operative period. We have designed a simple measurement system according to Poiseuille’s formula by which the viscosity value could be measured reliably since the system was calibrated frequently using distilled water as a reference. Results: The mean value of the pre-operative plasma viscosity of the patients was 1. 73±0.25 mPa.s and 1.76±0.21 mPa.s in V1 and V2 groups respectively. After the infusion of the fluids, the mean viscosity values decreased to 1. 68±0.30 mPa.s and 1.66±0.17mPa.s in V1 and V2 groups respectively (p=0.37).conclusion: The plasma viscosity reduction in patients of V2 group was not significantly different from that of V1 group.

Background and Objectives: Diabetes mellitus is the most common endocrine disease. It has many implications and the most important is the cardiovascular ones, which are one of the causes of death in diabetic patients. Blood viscosity is one of the main factors impairing microcirculation and producing microangiopathy.Materials and Methods: In this study 13 male diabetic patients, 43-60 years of age with cardiovascular implications and 10 healthy male subjects in the same age groups were studied as controls. Whole blood viscosity and plasma viscosity were measured. Other factors such as glucose, fibrinogen, hematocrit, albumin and total protein that can affect viscosity were also measured. Results: Results showed increased total viscosities in the diabetics compared with controls, but only whole blood viscosity showed a significant difference (p<0.01). All factors except albumin were higher in diabetics than in controls, but only glucose and fibrinogen showed statistically significant difference (p<0.001) between diabetics and controls. Albumin level was lower in diabetic group, but not significant. Conclusions: It seems that the main reason for increased viscosity in these cases was change in plasma composition ( high glucose and fibrinogen). It is likely that high glucose and fibrinogen in diabetic patients may increase blood cell aggregation that results in high blood viscosity.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to see the effect of 7 sessions of circuit resistance exercise in consecutive days on plasma fibrinogen and viscosity, and some platelet parameters of young female students. Methods: Twenty volunteer female students in luteal phase of the menstrual cycle were selected and randomly divided into two groups of experimental and control. Experimental group were performed a circuit resistance exercise including 10 nonstop exercise with 60% one repeat maximum in 4 round (20s for each exercise, and 3 min for between round rest). Each session was took 32-40 min with warm up and cool down. Blood sampling was taken 24h before and after first and seventh session of training respectively in 12h overnight fast condition to assay plasma fibrinogen, platelet counts (PLT), mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), and platelet large cell rate (PLC-R). Plasma viscosity was calculated. Results: Plasma fibrinogen, plasma viscosity, PLT, MPV, and PLC-R elevated significantly affected by 7 consecutive sessions of circuit resistance training; but PDW didn’t change significantly. Conclusion: Circuit resistance training increased haematological and rheological plasma parameters of coagulation that could possibly affect the long-term cardiovascular health. So, female students must use the between sessions rest for appropriate recovery from circuit resistance exercise. It could be useful for short term adaptation.

Abstract:

Background: There have been few investigations into the impact of high-intensity interval training on blood rheology. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate how high-intensity interval training conducted with different duration affects fibrinogen and plasma viscosity in sedentary young college men. Methods: For this study, 36 healthy male participants were selected and grouped based on their individual characteristics. The groups included a control group (n = 9), a 45-second training group (tr-45; n = 9), a 30-second training group (tr-30; n = 9), and a 15-second training group (tr-15; n = 9). The training regimen comprised six sessions over two weeks, with varying sets (4, 5, 6, 6, 7, 4 respectively) and durations of 15, 30, and 45 seconds for different groups. There was a fixed 4-minute rest interval between each set, with a consistent load of 0.6 on the Wingate cycle ergometer. Blood samples were collected 48 hours before and after the final session to analyze fibrinogen and plasma viscosity levels. Results: There were no significant differences between groups in plasma fibrinogen levels (F3, 32 = 2.303, P = 0.96). However, post-test analysis revealed a significant decrease in plasma fibrinogen in the tr-45 group (P = 0.027) compared to pre-test levels. Plasma viscosity did not significantly change between groups (F3, 32 = 0.651, P = 0.058), but there was a significant interaction between time and group (F3, 40= 4.43, P = 0.009). Post-test analysis showed a significant decrease in plasma viscosity in the tr-45 (P = 0.010), tr-30 (P = 0.002), and tr-15 (P = 0.003) groups, while it significantly increased in the control group (P = 0.004) compared to pre-test levels. Conclusions: The findings suggest that high-intensity interval training can effectively decrease blood rheology and factors such as fibrinogen and plasma viscosity, with the 45-second HIIT being more efficient. Therefore, incorporating this training into Physical Activity Programs could be beneficial for inactive men.
