Introduction: Spermatogenesis is a complex process affected by different factors that can cause male infertility. The present study was conducted to investigate the improving effect of walnut oil on the complications of Busulfan therapy on sperm parameters in rats.Materials and Methods: This study was conducted on 32 adult male Wistar rats randomly divided into a control group, a Busulfan group (15mg/kg) and two other groups that received Busulfan+walnut oil at 0.1 cc and 0.2 cc doses per 100 g of body weight. The rats' testosterone levels were measured after 48 days of treatment and their sperm parameters were then examined. The data obtained analyzed in SPSS-18 using Duncan's post-hoc test and the ANOVA.Results: The results obtained revealed a significant decrease in testosterone levels, sperm count and sperm motility (p£0.001) sra an increase in the main sperm count for pinhead, spiral tail, immotile and non-progressively motile sperm in the Busulfan group compared to in the control group (p<0.05). Testosterone levels also increased in the group receiving Busulfan+0.2 cc of walnut oil compared to the group receiving only Busulfan, although not significantly. The average count for the non-progressively motile and the immotile sperms also decreased in the two groups receiving walnut oil compared to in the Busulfan group. Conclusion: According to the results obtained, the intake of walnut oil in large doses helps reduce the side effects of Busulfan on testosterone levels and some sperm parameters.

Introduction: Liver is one of the vital organs in the body with a key role in regulating many physiological mechanisms. The present study was conducted to examine the effect of the hydroalcoholic extract of Heraclum persicum administered to the mother rats during pregnancy on liver enzymes and blood biochemical factors in their infant male rats.Materials and Methods: The present experimental study was conducted on 40 infant male Wistar rats divided into 5 groups of 8, whose mothers were then divided into 5 groups of 8 during their pregnancy, including a negative control group, a sham control group and three experimental groups. The negative control group did not receive any treatments while the sham control group received only distilled water. Experimental groups 1, 2 and 3 received, respectively, 100, 200 or 400 mg/kg oral doses of Heracleum persicum on a daily basis for a period of 21 days (the pregnancy term). At the end of the pregnancy and when the male infant rats were 25 days old, the infant rats' blood samples were taken and their liver enzymes (alanine transaminase [ALT], aspartate aminotransferase [AST] and alkaline phosphatase [ALP]) and biochemical factors (Albumin and total serum protein) were measured. The data obtained were analyzed using the ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc test. P<0.05 was taken as the level of statistical significance. Results: The AST and ALT levels had increased significantly in experimental groups 2 and 3 compared to in the negative and sham control groups (P<0.05). The Albumin level had also increased significantly in experimental group 3 compared to in the negative and sham control groups (P<0.05). There was also a significant difference between ALP and serum protein levels in the experimental groups and the negative and sham control groups. Conclusion: The hydroalcoholic extract of Heracleum persicum may have changed the liver function and increased ALT and AST as a result of its furanocoumarin and trans-anethole content. The extract's alkaloid and flavonoid content also increase serum Albumin levels.

Introduction: Choosing the right contraceptive method is one of the main global health issues concerning families. Various medicinal properties have been attributed to the different parts of mango trees, including anti-diabetic, anti-oxidant and contraceptive properties. The present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of mango leaves on body weight, testicular weight, spermatogenesis and fertility in male rats.Materials and Methods: This study was conducted on 35 male rats weighing approximately 250 g randomly divided into a negative control group, a sham control group and three experimental groups. The sham control group received 2 ml of distilled water and the three experimental groups received 500, 1000 and 1500 mg/kg doses of mango leaf extract on a daily basis for 28 days. The rats' weight was measured and recorded on the first and last days of the experiment period. To evaluate their fertility rates, the male rats were kept in the vicinity of female rats in order to be able to reproduce. The male rats were eventually anesthetized and their testicular tissues were fixed for histological examinations. Results: The mean body weight and testicular weight decreased significantly in the experimental groups receiving the extract compared to in the control groups. The number of male sex cells and Sertoli and Leydig cells, the seminiferous tubule diameter, the seminiferous epithelium height and fertility rates decreased significantly in the experimental groups compared to in the control groups. Conclusion: The aqueous extract of mango leaves reduces male reproductive activity and can be used as a contraceptive.

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is one of the main metabolic disorders across the world. Numerous medicinal herbs are currently used for the management of diabetes mellitus. The present study was conducted to assess the effect of the hydroalcoholic extract of Echium amoenum (EA) on glycemic control and weight in diabetic male rats.Materials and Methods: The study was conducted on 30 male Wistar rats randomly divided into five groups of six rats each, including a control group, a diabetic group receiving no treatments and three diabetic groups treated with 100, 400 or 600 mg/kg of the hydroalcoholic extract of Iranian EA. Diabetes was induced in the rats by the intraperitoneal administration of a single dose of Streptozotocin (60 mg/kg). The rats' blood glucose and weight were measured at baseline and then on days 10, 20 and 30 of the study. Their insulin and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity levels were determined at the end of the study. Results: In all the groups treated with the extract, there was a significant increase in the mean weight and a significant decrease in the mean blood glucose levels compared to the diabetic group (P<0.05). Insulin levels increased significantly in the rats treated with a 600 mg/kg dose of the extract compared to the diabetic group. SOD activity also increased significantly in the groups receiving 400 and 600 mg/kg doses of the extract compared to the diabetic group (P<0.05).Conclusion: The study demonstrated that the hydroalcoholic extract of Iranian EA has hypoglycemic effects and can be used to prevent weight loss due to diabetes. These effects might be due to the presence of compounds such as flavonoids and saponins and some of the plant's antioxidant properties.

Abstract:

Introduction: Doppler sonography provides the best tool for assessing a transplanted kidneys’ vascular status.Cyclosporine A, a drug that si widely prescribed for preventing transplant rejection, has vasoconstriction effects that affect Doppler parameters. To date, there has been little agreement on this effect. The present study was conducted to examine the potential effects of cyclosporine A on Doppler sonographic parameters.Materials and Methods: The present cross-sectional study was conducted on 31 patients with stable conditions about 6 to 18 months after their kidney transplant. The Doppler sonographic parameters assessed included the renal arterial resistive index (RI), the pulsatility index, the end diastolic velocity (EDV) and the peak systolic velocity (PSV), measured at the interlobar artery before and 2 hours after the peak serum levels of oral cyclosporine A. The data obtained were analyzed in SPSS to identify the potential effects of cyclosporin A on Doppler sonographic parameters. Results: Comparing Doppler sonographic parameters before and 2 hours after the intake of cyclosporine A in patients with transplanted kidneys with a mean serum Creatinine level of 1.3 showed the parameter values to not have changed. Conclusion: The present study showed that the intake of cyclosporine A does not lead to a severe increase in Doppler sonographic parameters.
