Abstract:

Background: Brucellosis is one of the most common infectious diseases in some areas of Iran. It is a matter of problem in endemic areas, since it involves not only humans and animals but also causes socioeconomic problems. This study is designed to study the epidemiology of brucellosis in the rural and urban population of Azna, and applying the results to planning for controlling the disease in the area. Methods: The study is descriptive, cross-sectional, conductedall people identified having brucellosis- based on lab results. Totally 41 brucellosis patients reffered to health centers of Azna county during 2007-2008 were studied according to epidemiological, demographic, laboratory and treatment protocols aspects. Results: Fourty one subjects were found to be positive to brucellosis in laboratory tests. About 68.3% of patients were female and 31.7% male. Around 95.2% of subjects were living in rural and 4.8 % in urban area.46.3 % of patients had history of animal contact. The most common transmission was through dairy products (53.7%). The most contagious seasons were spring and summer. Disease was more common among farmers (29.3%) and housewives (24.4%).Conclusions: Due to the high contamination rate of this disease and its economical consequences on individuals and on society, steps can be take to prevent its prevalence by good supervision on supplying and distribution of dairy products, animal vaccination, public instruction and alarming.

Abstract:

Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between emotional intelligence and personality traits of nurses with patient’s satisfaction of nursing services in the Hospitals of Jundishapur University of Ahvaz. Methods: The sample of this study was consisted of 352 nurses in the hospitals of Jundishapur University of Ahvaz, selected through simple random sampling and 352 patients selected through convenience sampling, based on the nurses' sample. The instruments used include the Emotional Intelligence Scale, Revised NEO Personality Inventory, and Patient Satisfaction Instrument. Results: The results showed personality characters and emotional intelligence and its dimensions, correlated with patients' satisfaction. The results of two separate multiple regression analysis revealed that dimensions of emotional intelligence accounting for 29% of the variance in patient’s satisfaction (MR=0.542), and personality characters of nurses accounting for 16% of the variance in patient’s satisfaction (MR=0.405).Conclusion: The results suggest the relation between the emotional intelligence and personality characters of nurses with patient’s' satisfaction of nursing services.

Abstract:

Background: Snake venom is a complex mixture of different components including proteins and peptides that mostly has enzymatic properties. In this study, the alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity is measured in Iranian Vipera lebetina, venomous snake on sephadex G-100 to investigate the suitability of this procedure. Methods: The method of this study is experimental.100 mg of the crude venom of Vipera lebetina by gel filtration chromatography on sephadex G-100, that equilibrated with 20mM ammonium acetate buffer pH 7.6, was fractionated into 6 fractions. ALP enzyme activity was determined using Sulkowski et al method and using paranitrophenylphosphate as substrate. Results: Ninety mg (approximately 79%) of crude venom of Iranian vipera lebetina is protein. Crude venom produced 6 distinct fractions. These fractions were labeled peak I to peak VI (PI-PVI), in order of their delution.Specific activity in crude venom and PI were 4x10-4 and 1x10-3 unit/mg, respectively. Other peaks didn’t show any activity of ALP enzyme. Conclusion: The results indicated that the Iranian vipera lebetina venom has ALP enzyme activity and that their total activity belongs to PI. Other peaks didn’t show any ALP activity.

Abstract:

Background: Studying the malnutrition-related factors in adolescents and trying to eliminate this problem is one of the important factors in health and in constant development. The aim of this study was evaluating demographic indices respecting dietary intake of the most essential nutrients in female adolescent students. Methods: One hundred and seventy female adolescent high school students were selected randomly, included in a cross-sectional study and completed the demographic questionnaire. Nutrient intake was evaluated by a qualitative food frequency questionnaire. The gathered Data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, ANOVA test and Pearson correlation coefficients. Results: Weekly consumption frequency of high fat foods was significantly higher in students with unemployed than employed mothers (P=0.026). Weekly consumption frequency of high calorie and low nutrient foods was significantly high in students having possessory house than lessee students (P=0.029). There was a negative significant association between the number of family members with dairy consumption frequency of high calcium (r=0.19, P=0.013) and high protein (r= 0.241, P=0.002) foods. Conclusion: The results show the obvious relationship between demographic indices and nutrients intake in female adolescents.

Abstract:

Extremities anomalies following scorpion sting has been scarcely studied. In this case report we report a pregnant woman who stung by the Mesobuthus eupeus (M.E) in her early pregnancy. The baby was born with left upper extremity limb malformations in form of amputation of digits (fingers). The particular deleterious mechanism of scorpion venom on extremities abnormalities has not been recognized yet.
