The aim of this study is the construction, standardization and identification of the underlying factors of the Emotional Divorce Questionnaire. The population of the study included all the ordinary men and women seeking divorce in Boushehr province, Iran. The sample consisted of 1312 subjects.1001 people were in the normal group and 311 people constituted the divorce-seeking group.501 questionnaires were analyzed for exploratory factor analysis, and 500 questionnaires were analyzed for confirmatory factor analysis. The sample was selected using the availability sampling method. The data analysis methods included correlation, exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and multivariate analysis of variance. The instruments were the Enrich Fowers, the Olson et al. Questionnaire (1989), the Desire to Divorce Questionnaire by Roosevelt et al. (1986), and the Marriage Instability Questionnaire by Edwards et al. (1987). The results of the exploratory factor analysis identified 9 factors as the main factors of emotional divorce. The correlation between the newly-developed questionnaire and the Desire to Divorce Questionnaire (0.59, P<0.001) and the Instability of Marriage Questionnaire (0.62, P<0.001) is indicative of its concurrent validity. Also the discriminate validity of this questionnaire was worked out against the Enrich Fowers, the Olson et al. Questionnaire, which indicated its appropriate validity. Cronbach's alpha for all the questions was 0.95. Given its appropriate psychometric properties, this questionnaire can be considered a useful instrument for assessing the emotional divorce among men and women, which may lay the ground for closer inspections in related fields.
