Background and aims: Changes in the vital signs of burn patients are one of the most common problems during dressing. We should look for ways to reduce pain and anxiety followed by changes in the vital signs of these patients. Aromatherapy has been introduced as a low-cost, accessible and safe way to reduce pain and anxiety in patients. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the effect of aromatherapy massage and inhalation aromatherapy on vital signs in burn patients. Materials & Methods: This single-blind randomized clinical trial was performed on 90 patients admitted to the burn ward of Sina Hospital in Tabriz, Iran. Patients were randomly divided into three groups: massage aromatherapy, inhalation aromatherapy and control. The vital signs of the patients were recorded in the 3 groups before and after the intervention (the control group received no intervention) and the results of the data were analyzed using SPSS software. Result: The results of this study showed that the massage therapy reduces systolic blood pressure, respiratory rate and heart rate in burn patients and the inhalation aromatherapy reduces systolic blood pressure in these patients. Conclusion: Using aromatherapy methods can lead to fewer changes in the vital signs of burn patients and ultimately reduce the duration of hospitalization and burn complications.

Background & Aims: Disease perception is based on patients’ beliefs and perceived information about their condition which affects the mental health of the individual and how they deal with it. The purpose of this study was to determine the perception of disease in patients with heart failure. Materials & Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was performed on 150 patients admitted to the Cardiology Care Units of selected hospitals affiliated to Iran University of Medical Sciences in 1396. All patients were selected by the sequential method. Data were collected as self-report using the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (B-IPQ). Data analysis was done using descriptive and inferential statistics (Scheffé test (Post Hoc Test) ANOVA and Pearson Correlation Coefficient) in SPSS software version 16. Results: The lowest score of illness perception in the selected units was 30, the highest score was 76, and the mean score of disease perception in patients with heart failure was 59. 42 ± 7. 86. The lowest mean was allocated to the illness perception (4. 58 ± 3. 17) and the highest mean related to the outcome (9/33 ± 1/34) followed by the patients’ degrees of concern (8. 79 ± 21. 14). Most of the units (54. 7%) considered stress and psychological problems as the most important cause of the disease. The second and third factors were their lifestyle (46%) and socioeconomic problems (30. 7%). The results showed that educational level variables (P = 0. 004), income adequacy (P = 0. 002), discharge fraction (P = 0. 001) and severity of disease (P <0. 001) and exercise or physical activities (P = 0. 001) were related to illness perception. Conclusion: According to the findings, patients were considered to be at high risk for illness perception. The results of this study can be the basis for further research in order to select appropriate strategies for improving illness perception in patients with heart failure which can ultimately lead to advancement of disease management by patients.

Background & Aim: One of the important aspects in education is the psychological backgrounds which can be effective in Critical thinking (CT). Critical Thinking and Emotional Intelligence are essential skills in health care to provide optimal care for patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation of emotional intelligence (EI) with CT. Materials & Methods: This was a descriptive correlation study. A total of 100 nursing and midwifery students of Bushehr University of Medical Sciences participated in this study during the second semester of the academic year 2017. The Data was collected by California Critical Thinking Skills Test and Bar-On EI inventory and with descriptive statistics (frequency, mean, standard deviation) and analytical statistics (Spearman correlation, Pearson correlation, T test, regression model) were analyzed using SPSS-PC (v. 16). Results: there is a positive correlation between total CT score and total EI score (p<0. 05). It is in components of EI intrapersonal, adaptation, and stress management (p≤ 0. 05). The regression model shows stress management is as predictive factor for CT. Conclusion: This study suggested more focus to components of EI intrapersonal, adaptation, and stress management of students to prepare students for entry into professional practice. Students, while faced with complex situations and decisions in the clinical setting, need to adapt and attention to human needs. In this regard, the integration of critical thinking with cognitive-emotional approaches in nursing and midwifery education programs is suggested.

Background & Aims: One of the important dimension of health is mental health. Men in order to confront stresses, have used defense mechanisms for life-long. Defenses play an important role in mental health. Each mental disturbance relates with a given maladaptive defense mechanism. In this study the relation between the mental health and defense mechanisms of the bachelor students of Urmia University of Medical sciences has been assessed. Methods & Materials: In this descriptive study 189 bachelor students of UMSU were chosen by randomized cluster sampling and completed defense mechanisms questionnaire (DSQ40) and mental health questionnaire (GHQ28). The data’ s were analyzed by descriptive statistics and Independent t test and Pearson’ s coefficient correlation. Results: It was revealed that mental health and its dimensions have a statically significant Relation with immature defense mechanisms, in which people who have a lower level of mental health use much more immature defense mechanisms than the others. It was shown that somatic symptom with a 95% confidence level had a weak and opposite correlation with neurotic defense mechanisms (p <0. 01). Conclusion: There are degrees of disturbances in different dimensions of mental health in these students and use of immature defense mechanism has a negative effect on their mental health. Evaluation of students’ mental health and appropriate medical and educational intervention is necessary.
