Abstract:

Back ground: Progress in the quality of heart operation has contributed to the decrease in morbidity and mortality. Since the results in our country were not clear, we made a survey in one of the most important hospitals of heart surgery. This retrospective, descriptive study was made on 11200 operations performed during 1977 - 1996, from which nearly 20% (2200 cases) were randomly selected and categorized according to the year of operation (730 patients operated in 1977 - 1986 and 1500 patients were operated in 1987 - 1996). Results revealed that cardiopulmonary Bypass (CPB) was applied for 55% of patients in the first ten years and for 60% of them in the second ten years, PDA, total correction for TF, systemic to pulmonary shunt, ASD and VSD closures in the first and second ten years were not different, but mitral repair and valve replacement were 11% and 1%during the first and second ten years respectively. The ratio of some surgical operations like mitral valve repair and mitral valve replacement showed a nearly ten times decrease in the second ten years, which is probably due to primary prevention of rheumatic fever in our country and also mortality of patients showed a 2% decrease during the second ten years. These achievements have been due to more surgical experience and better care of the patients in pediatric ICU.

Abstract:

Fetal loss and recurrent abortion are responsible for significant emotional distress for couples desiring children. Regarding the etiologic importance, this study has been carried out to determine the prevalence of anticardiolipin antibody (ACLA) and antinuclear antibody (ANA) in women with recurrent miscarriage. This descriptive study was carried out in shariatee hospital of Bandar Abbas university of Medical Sciences, during 2000 - 2001. 109 women with definite diagnosis of recurrent abortion or fetal loss as patients and 220 matched women with at least two successful deliveries and negative history of miscarriage as controls were studied. The sera of the patients and the controls were tested by ELISA method for determining ACLA and ANA.. There was a significant difference between results of this study suggest that autoantibodies play a significant (P < 0.001). The miscarriage. Further studies are needed to explore the role of autoantibodies in fetal loss and spontaneous abortion.

Abstract:

In patients with a history of mania (Bipolar patients), depression occurs simultaneously with manic attacks and the usage of lithium carbonate can be effective in attack prevention. In this research the serum lithium levels of 30 manic patients (using drugs produced in Iran) was examined. Treatment of manic patients or preventive therapy is based on the 12 hour lithium concentration (after last usage of the drug). The results of this research showed that 12 hour-lithium concentration in 40% of patients wasn't within the therapeutic range < 0.6meq/l) and this amount was within the therapeutic range in 60% patients (0.6-1.2 meq/l). there was significant statistical difference between these two amounts. In this research none of the patients were poisoned with lithium. The maximum concentration after using one dosage of lithium carbonate was 91% meq/l and the max time was between 1-4 hours. In comparison the Cmax and Tmax of foreign manufactured drug were reported to be between 0.6-.9 meq/l and 1-2 hours respectively.

Abstract:

Scabies is an important skin disease attended by intense itching, specially at nights. It is caused in human by a kind of arthropode called" sacopt scabiei var hominis". It is transmitted by touch from person and transmission is less likely through touch of infected clothes, beds, towels and bed sheets. Scabies is observed through out the world specially not and humid areas and in crowded places like prisons, barracks, rest-nouses, etc. This descriptive study was conducted to determine the prevalence of subjects was 763 from whom 609 soldiers were suspected to have scabies. Using scraping test method, specimens were prepared from cautanous canals and papules and the parasite was diagnosed through microscopic method. The prevalence of scabies among subjects (763 soldiers) was determined to be 125.5 per 1000. There was a significant difference between rest house residency and morbidity (P = 0 .046). 25.26% of positive cases belonged to defense group. There was a significant difference disease prevalence and. service section (p = ) . In this study the relationship between scabies and factors such as age, educational level service record, the dispersion of skin lesions, time of itching, treatment, and health education were examined. Based on the results of this study, it is highly probable that the rest houses of the air force base are sources of infection and prevalence of the disease among soldiers.

Abstract:

Vitamin and iron deficiencies are the most common deficiencies in children below two years in our country. Lack of these elements in the first two years of life impairs mental and physical growth and lowers learning ability, resistance to infection and causes behavior changes and ultimately will lead to unfavourable social and economic outcomes. This cross-sectional study was carried out to determine the causes of not giving iron and multivitamin drops to children. The study populations were 300 mothers whit children under two years old who did not give iron and multivitamin drops to their children. A questionnaire was used for date gathering. The results of the present study revealed a great positive association between knowledge, attitude and action of mothers about the two drops, and that employed and educated mothers had more positive knowledge and attitude than others. The most important causes of not giving drops to children were cited to be: lack of knowledge on how to give the drops, not taking them by children, lack of time and lack of distribution of them by health centers on time. Regarding the importance of giving iron and multivitamin drops to children below two years old, proper training of mothers and adequate distribution of these drops health centers is recommended.

Abstract:

Olive plant- Olea europaea L- has been known since ancient times and has been used to treat diseases. To study the morphologic, microscopic and phytochemical features of the plant, the plant leave] were collected, identified and dried in this study. To confirm the existence or non- existence of the active ingredients the plant hydro alcoholic extracts underwent primary experiments. One of the ingredients studied in this experiment was falconoid. Which was detected by uv.

Abstract:

The functional classification of cardiomyopathies includes three types of dilated, hypertrophic and restrictive. Idiopathic restrictive cardiomyopathy is a poorly recognized entity of unknown cause characterized by nondilated, nonhypertrophied ventricles diastolic dysfunction resulting in dilated atria and variable systolic function. Restrictive cardiomyopathy is rare in childhood and have poor prognosis. The purpose of this report is to review the clinical and hemodynamic profile and outcome of restrictive cardiomyopathy in a group of five Iranian children. (Three girls and two boys). The Mean age at diagnosis was 13.2 years (range 5 to 17 years). All patients had evidence of systemic and pulmonary venous congestion. Biatrial enlargement was the most consistent EKG finding and was present in all patients. The most striking echocardiograhic feature was severe biatrial dilation in the presence of normal or near normal ventricular cavity dimensions. Elevation of left and right ventricular end-diastolic pressures, pulmonary artery pressure and right atrial pressure were noted in all patients undergoing cardiac catheterization. Pericardial biopsy was performed to rule out of constrictive pericarditis in two patients. One patient died 10 years after diagnosis.

Abstract:

Osteopetrosis is a rare hereditary bone disease of heterogeneous pathophysiology in which failure of osteoclastic bone resorption leads to increased bone mass. The bone has poor mechanical properties. A German radiologist, Albers-Schnberg, first described osteopetrosis in 1904. Here we are presenting a case of infantile Osteopetrosis in our province (Hormozgan-Iran) who referred to the Pediatric clinic with upper respiratory pneumonitis at the second month of her life. She was clinically showing proptosis, hepatosplenomegaly and laboratory data confirmed her anemia; chest X-Ray also showed Hyperdensity and trabicular pattern. She died at the age of 4 months with the complication of thrombocytopenia and pneumonitis.
