Purpose: The aim of present study was to identify Iranian couples’ view points on factors that affect marital commitment. Methods: The research method was qualitative and was performed using content analysis. Based on purposive sampling and theoretical saturation criterion, 10 couples participated in this study. For data collection, semi-structured, in-depth interviews were used. Results: After content analysis of data, three main categories were identified: couple competency, individual competency, and contextual factors. couple competency was shown to have 12 sub-categories, which include encouragement and reassurance, genuineness, conflict management, humorous attitude, coordination and consultation, clarity of roles, social networking, support and companionship, integrity, imagining a future for a relationship, making effort to communicate and offering tangible reminder. Individual competency had 4 sub-categories which includes modeling of original family, experiences of original family, religious and spiritual beliefs and values, positive attitudes to marriage. Contextual factors included one subcategory that was demographic characteristics. Conclusion: Increasing marital commitment and stability is dependent upon achieving and having skills in all three areas. Considering the role of each of these areas, marital commitment can be improved by designing educational packages based on each of these areas.
