Abstract

Societal security is a basic component of social and political order.This research was conducted in 2008-2009 in AHVAZ with the aim to probe, from a sociological perspective, the SENSE OF SOCIETAL SECURITY and to identify some of the social and political factors influencing it.Within a theoretical framework based on the Copenhagen School, three Dimensions of the SENSE OF SOCIETAL SECURITY were examined- personal security, financial security, and political security. The study utilized a questionnaire survey. The sample included 600 adult (16 years of age and older) residents of AHVAZ. Research results indicate that SOCIOECONOMIC STATUS and national IDENTITY have positive impacts on the SENSE OF SOCIETAL SECURITY while feelings of relative deprivation and powerlessness have negative effects on the SENSE OF SOCIETAL SECURITY. Furthermore, ethnic IDENTITY and gender affect the sense of personal security and the sense of financial security respectively.
