Abstract

The BULLWHIP EFFECT is a phenomenon that occurs in supply chains. It means that, in a traditional supply chain, the amplitude and variance of orders increase steadily from customer to initial suppliers. This article aims to examine the effect of inventory policy on the BULLWHIP EFFECT under eight different scenarios, in a two-level supply chain, consisting of a retailer and a supplier. These scenarios include two methods as inventory policy; continuous and periodic review, two forecasting methods; moving average and exponential smoothing, and two estimators. For each scenario, the BULLWHIP EFFECT is shown in terms of mathematical equations. By comparing the scenarios and their interactions with the BULLWHIP EFFECT, it is proven that exponential smoothing as the forecasting method and the first estimator, lead to a lower degree of BULLWHIP EFFECT.
