THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LOVE TYPES AND SUBJECTIVE WELL BEING IN MARRIED COLLEGE STUDENTS

Pages

  491-501

Abstract

Many studies have indicated that love, as a psychic Phenomenon, is an important predictor of happiness, satisfaction, and positive emotions. The present research examined the relationship between companionate and PASSIONATE LOVE and SATISFACTION WITH LIFE and positive and NEGATIVE AFFECT. 123 married university students (63 females) were selected. Scales of PASSIONATE LOVE and COMPANIONATE LOVE were used to assess love, and subjective wellbeing was measured by SATISFACTION WITH LIFE Scale and POSITIVE AFFECT and Negative Scale. The data were analyzed using multivariable regression methods. Results show that regardless of gender differences, relationship between COMPANIONATE LOVE and SATISFACTION WITH LIFE is positive and significant and with NEGATIVE AFFECT is inversely significant. It was found that PASSIONATE LOVE doesn't have any significant relationship with subjective wellbeing components, but gender differences found only between COMPANIONATE LOVE and positive and NEGATIVE AFFECT. In females, the relationship between COMPANIONATE LOVE and POSITIVE AFFECT was positively significant and with NEGATIVE AFFECT was inversely significant; however, in the males the relationship between COMPANIONATE LOVE and positive and NEGATIVE AFFECT was not significant. Therefore, the present research shows that love does not simply bring happiness and the relationship between love and subjective wellbeing is multidimensional. In general, the results support the important role that love plays in subjective wellbeing components.
