THE STUDY OF FATAL HIGHWAY ACCIDENTS' CAUSES (A CASE STUDY OF ESFAHAN)

Abstract

 Traffic accidents account for a large number of death toll. However, some are fatal and some just result in financial loss. On the other hand, its social, cultural and economic effects leave a mark on human beings. Similarly, this issue seems to be a mammoth problem in Iran in a way that our country is classed as one of the countries whose traffic and FATAL ACCIDENTS stand out among the countries in the world. Since intra-city HIGHWAYS provide a great deal of local trips and transportation, an attempt has been made to study the reasons behind FATAL ACCIDENTS in the HIGHWAYS of Esfahan in the year 2007. The present study was carried out periodically on the FATAL ACCIDENTS registered by the TRAFFIC POLICE in the year 2007 in the HIGHWAYS of Esfahan. Using statistical analyses, the ACCIDENT FORMS were studied and the effective parameters in FATAL ACCIDENTS were pinpointed, and finally the relationship between these parameters with the FATAL ACCIDENTS was explained.The results show that a sizeable portion of FATAL ACCIDENTS in the HIGHWAYS under study take place when the MASS DIFFERENCE of the vehicles involved in the accidents is high. In addition, the rate of accidents in the second half of the year outweigh than that of the first half.
